China Just Beat Silicon Valley to the World's First AI-Native Smartphone

For months, the tech world has been waiting to see what OpenAI, Apple, and Google would build next.

Rumors have swirled around OpenAI's mysterious AI device with legendary Apple designer Jony Ive. Apple continues to weave AI deeper into the iPhone. Google is rapidly expanding Gemini across Android.

But while Silicon Valley has been talking, a Chinese startup may have just moved first.

StepFun, a fast-growing AI company backed by Tencent, has unveiled the StepX Neo, a smartphone it describes as the world's first mass-market agentic AI phone. Instead of treating AI as just another app or voice assistant, the company has rebuilt the entire phone around AI agents that can complete tasks for you from start to finish.

This Is Not Just Another AI Phone

Every major smartphone company now advertises AI features.

Apple has Apple Intelligence.

Samsung has Galaxy AI.

Google has Gemini.

But these systems mostly help you perform individual tasks summarize a document, edit a photo, or answer a question.

StepFun believes that is yesterday's approach.

The StepX Neo introduces an agent-first experience, where the AI does not simply respond to commands it actually carries out entire workflows across multiple apps and services on your behalf.

Instead of opening five different apps yourself, the phone searches flights, recommends hotels, books transportation, organizes your itinerary, saves the details, and prepares reminders all automatically.

That is the future StepFun is betting on.

Meet Step AOS and Amoo

Powering the new device is Step AOS, a custom operating system built specifically for AI agents rather than traditional app navigation.

At its center is Amoo, StepFun's personal AI assistant.

Unlike conventional chatbots, Amoo is deeply integrated into the operating system, allowing it to access files, apps, system settings, and online services simultaneously.

According to StepFun, users simply describe what they want, while the AI decides which apps, services, and actions are needed to complete the request. 

Your Apps Still Exist But the AI Uses Them for You

Rather than replacing popular apps, StepFun is partnering with them.

At launch, the company announced integrations with major Chinese platforms including:

Alipay for payments, Trip.com for travel bookings, Didi Chuxing for ride-hailing, Meituan for food delivery and local services, WPS Office, CapCut for content creation.

Instead of switching between each service manually, Amoo can coordinate everything behind the scenes. 

More Than Just a Smart Assistant

The StepX Neo also introduces several AI-powered capabilities designed for everyday life.

According to StepFun, the phone can:

Translate live conversations in 32 languages, Translate phone calls and text messages, Understand text through the camera, Organize travel plans automatically, Track visa requirements, Remind users about flight check-ins, Assist with customs documentation, Learn personal preferences over time

Many of these tasks can even run locally on the device using StepFun's own Step Edge AI model. 

Why This Matters

The timing could not be more interesting.

Just days before the announcement, Apple filed a lawsuit accusing OpenAI of misappropriating hardware trade secrets as OpenAI continues developing its own AI hardware ambitions.

While America's biggest tech companies are battling in court over the future of AI devices, StepFun has quietly introduced a working product that could redefine what smartphones become in the AI era.

Whether StepX Neo succeeds commercially remains uncertain, but it shifts the conversation from adding AI to smartphones toward building smartphones around AI.

An official release date, Global availability, Pricing, Detailed hardware specifications

The company has also made bold performance claims about its AI system that have yet to be independently verified.

Repeat.

StepFun believes the next generation of devices won't require users to think about apps at all. Instead, AI agents will become the interface, quietly coordinating everything in the background. Whether that vision becomes the industry's future remains to be seen.

But one thing is already clear: the race to build the next generation of AI hardware is no longer being led exclusively by Silicon Valley.

China just made its move. And everyone else is now racing to catch up.
