Nigeria Emerges as Africa's Highest-Ranked Country in Global AI Assessment

For years, conversations about artificial intelligence in Africa usually started with the same countries: South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, or Rwanda.

But today, there's a new name at the top.

Nigeria has officially emerged as Africa's highest-ranked country in the 2026 Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI), climbing an impressive 42 places to rank 38th globally. It is one of the biggest jumps recorded in this year's rankings and a strong signal that the country's AI ambitions are beginning to translate into measurable progress.

For a nation often recognized for its fintech boom and thriving startup ecosystem, this latest achievement suggests Nigeria is becoming a serious player in the global AI conversation.

From Playing Catch-Up to Leading Africa

Just two years ago, Nigeria ranked 80th globally in the inaugural Global Index on Responsible AI.

Fast forward to 2026, and the country now sits at 38th worldwide with an overall score of 45.93, making it the highest-ranked nation in Africa. The report also identifies Nigeria as a global "Bright Spot" for its efforts to prepare citizens for the AI era while promoting responsible AI governance.

That is more than just a number.

It reflects years of investment in AI policy, digital infrastructure, innovation, research, skills development, and public-private collaboration.

What Exactly Is the Global Index on Responsible AI?

The Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) evaluates how countries are developing, governing, and deploying artificial intelligence responsibly.

Rather than measuring who has the most powerful AI models, the index focuses on questions like:

Does the country have AI policies?

Are ethical safeguards in place?

Is AI being developed responsibly?

Are citizens being prepared with AI skills?

Are governments using AI transparently?

The 2026 edition assessed 135 countries across governance, inclusion, labour and skills, trust and safety, public-sector AI use, and enabling conditions.
