ChatGPT Can Now Virtually Try On Clothes Before You Buy Them

Online shopping just got a little more personal. You know that moment when you find a dress, jacket, or pair of sunglasses online and think: “Okay… but how will this actually look on me?” ChatGPT now has an answer. OpenAI has launched Virtual Try-On globally, allowing shoppers to upload a selfie and see an AI-generated preview of themselves wearing clothing and accessories before deciding whether to buy. ChatGPT Can Now Virtually Try On Clothes Before You Buy Them

Online shopping just got a little more personal.

You know that moment when you find a dress, jacket, or pair of sunglasses online and think: “Okay… but how will this actually look on me?”

ChatGPT now has an answer.

OpenAI has launched Virtual Try-On globally, allowing shoppers to upload a selfie and see an AI-generated preview of themselves wearing clothing and accessories before deciding whether to buy. The feature is available on ChatGPT's web and mobile apps.

And OpenAI is not stopping there. It has also introduced Favorites, letting shoppers save products they discover and return to later.

Your selfie can become a virtual fitting room

The process is surprisingly simple.

When ChatGPT shows you a clothing or accessory product, you can tap the new “Try on” button and upload a selfie. ChatGPT then generates an image showing what the item could look like on you. You can also skip the product listing altogether.

Found something interesting on another website? Take a screenshot or upload a picture of the clothing or accessory into ChatGPT and ask it to show you how it might look on you.

So instead of staring at a model wearing a dress and trying to imagine yourself in it, you can actually get an AI-generated preview. That could change how people shop online.

And now you can save the things you like

OpenAI also introduced Favorites.

When you find a product you like, you can save it to your ChatGPT Library and organize your discoveries into folders. Your saved products can sit alongside the images created from your virtual try-ons, making the library more like a personal shopping board.

This sounds like a small feature. But it solves a very familiar problem:

You see something you love. You tell yourself, “I will come back to this later.”

Then you cannot find it again. Now ChatGPT can remember the product for you.

ChatGPT is becoming more than a product search engine

This is where things get interesting.

OpenAI is not positioning ChatGPT as simply a place to search for products. You can describe the kind of style you are looking for and ask ChatGPT to find pieces that fit that look. You can also upload a photo of an outfit you like and ask ChatGPT to identify similar pieces you can buy.

That means a single conversation could potentially move from: “I like this style.”

to “Find me something similar.”

to “Show me what it looks like on me.”

to “Save it so I can decide later.”

That is a much more complete shopping journey.

The technology behind it

The virtual try-on experience is powered by OpenAI's newer ChatGPT Images 2.5 model.

OpenAI says the model produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows image-editing instructions more reliably, and generates images faster than its previous image model. Those improvements matter for fashion.

If the AI changes the color of a dress, loses the shape of a sleeve or makes the fabric look completely different, the virtual try-on becomes much less useful.

The goal is to make the generated image feel close enough to the original product that shoppers can make a better-informed decision.

But do not mistake it for a real fitting room

There is an important limitation. The AI image does not guarantee that the clothing will actually fit you.

OpenAI specifically warns that try-on images may not perfectly represent the product or your appearance, and they do not guarantee size or fit. Shoppers are still advised to check the retailer's measurements, product information, and return policy before buying. That is important because an AI can show you what a dress might look like.

It cannot physically tell you whether the waist is too tight, whether the fabric stretches properly, or whether the sleeves feel comfortable.

In other words: The image can help with the decision. It cannot replace the fitting room completely.

Your photos also matter

There is another thing shoppers should know.

ChatGPT can save your reference photos, so you do not have to upload them every time you want to try something on. OpenAI says these photos can be managed through Settings → Personalization → Reference photos, where users can change or remove them.

So, if you are using the feature, it is worth understanding how your uploaded photos are stored and managed. After all, you are not just uploading a picture of a dress. You are potentially uploading your face and body image.

OpenAI is entering an already crowded fashion-AI space

Virtual try-on is not a completely new idea.

Google has already been developing AI-powered virtual try-on for shopping, while platforms such as Pinterest have spent years helping people discover fashion visually.

OpenAI is now bringing that experience directly into a conversational AI assistant. And that is the interesting part. ChatGPT can potentially combine search, recommendations, image generation, and shopping assistance in one conversation.

Instead of opening one app for inspiration, another for product search, and another to save your finds, the AI is trying to bring those steps together.

And for fashion brands, this could be a big deal

There is another side to this development that deserves attention. If people start using ChatGPT to discover what to wear, compare products, and virtually try things on, product images become even more important.

A fashion brand is not only competing for attention on Instagram or TikTok anymore. Its products may also need to look good and appear accurately when shoppers discover them through AI. That means clean product photography, accurate product information, good descriptions and up-to-date catalogues could become increasingly important for brands that want to be discovered through AI shopping.

OpenAI says product results are selected based on factors including relevance, availability, price and product quality, while product information can come from merchants and third-party providers.

The bigger picture

ChatGPT started as a tool for answering questions.

Then it became a writing assistant. Then a research assistant. Then an image generator.

Now it is increasingly becoming a shopping assistant. And with Virtual Try-On, OpenAI is making that shopping experience much more visual.

The interesting question is no longer just: “Can AI help me find clothes?”

It is becoming: “Can AI help me decide what actually looks good on me?”

For anyone who shops online, that is a very different experience.

And if this technology keeps improving, the next time you see an outfit you love online, you might not have to wonder how it would look on you.

You could just ask ChatGPT.
