ChatGPT Can Now Work on Websites for You Even After You Close Your Laptop

Imagine telling ChatGPT: “Find me the best flight, compare the options, and keep checking until you find one that fits my budget.” Then you close your laptop and walk away. A few years ago, that would have sounded like science fiction. Now, it is becoming a normal way to use AI. OpenAI has introduced a Cloud browser for ChatGPT Work, giving ChatGPT its own remote computer in the cloud.

ChatGPT Can Now Work on Websites for You Even After You Close Your Laptop

Imagine telling ChatGPT:

“Find me the best flight, compare the options, and keep checking until you find one that fits my budget.”

Then you close your laptop and walk away.

A few years ago, that would have sounded like science fiction.

Now, it is becoming a normal way to use AI.

OpenAI has introduced a Cloud browser for ChatGPT Work, giving ChatGPT its own remote computer in the cloud. Instead of simply telling you what to do on a website, ChatGPT can navigate supported sites, click buttons, enter information into forms, and complete certain web-based tasks on your behalf.

And there is an interesting part about passwords: ChatGPT itself does not see the password you enter.

ChatGPT Gets Its Own Computer

The easiest way to understand the new feature is to imagine giving ChatGPT a separate computer.

That computer lives in OpenAI's cloud.

When you ask ChatGPT Work to complete a task, it can open websites, read pages, and interact with them. It can also combine the browser with connected apps when that is the better way to complete the job.

You could ask it to find flights, compare products, check apartment listings, track a package, or even reconcile invoices. And unlike a normal browser session, the task does not necessarily end when you leave your computer.

ChatGPT can continue working remotely and pause when it needs you to provide information or approve something.

But What About Your Password?

This is where the feature gets particularly interesting.

When ChatGPT reaches a website that requires you to sign in, it pauses and asks you to use a secure sign-in form. You enter your username and password there, rather than typing them into the ChatGPT conversation.

OpenAI says the credentials go directly to the remote browser. The AI model cannot see the username or password you enter, and OpenAI says it does not store those sign-in credentials. Two-factor authentication can also be completed during the process.

After you sign in, the remote browser can maintain that authenticated session until it expires or you clear its browser data.

That means you do not necessarily have to log in again every time ChatGPT performs another task.

It Still Will Not Do Everything Without Asking

This is not a case of giving ChatGPT your accounts and telling it to do whatever it wants.

OpenAI says ChatGPT is designed to ask for confirmation before consequential actions, such as making a payment, confirming a booking, or creating another important real-world commitment.

You can also control which websites ChatGPT is allowed to access.

The settings include options to ask for permission every time, automatically approve safer-looking requests, or always allow access to particular sites. OpenAI specifically says that allowing a website does not remove the requirement for confirmation before consequential actions.

And if ChatGPT gets stuck, you can take control of the remote browser yourself and then hand it back.

Your Personal Browser Stays Separate

There is another important distinction.

Cloud browser is not simply taking over Chrome, Edge, or Safari on your laptop.

It runs on a separate remote computer with its own cookies, browser data, and signed-in sessions. OpenAI says it does not use your personal browser's open tabs, browsing history, saved passwords, cookies, or extensions. That is a major difference from simply giving an AI control of your existing browser.

But There Is Still a Catch

AI agents are becoming more capable, but websites can fight back.

Some websites block automated browser agents, and certain tasks may still require you to take over manually. ChatGPT also will not necessarily be able to complete every transaction or workflow.

There is also the bigger question of trust.

Giving an AI permission to browse is one thing.

Permitting it to act inside your accounts is another.

A wrong search result is annoying.

A wrong booking, financial action, or account change can be much more serious.

That is why OpenAI recommends checking website addresses, sign-in previews, confirmation requests, and the final results before relying on them.

The Bigger AI Shift

The most interesting thing about Cloud Browser is not really the browser.

It is what it represents.

For years, AI assistants mainly answered questions.

Then they started searching for information.

Now they are beginning to take actions.

You tell the AI the outcome you want, and it figures out the individual steps required to get there.

That is the real shift from chatbot to AI agent.

And perhaps the strangest part?

Your laptop can be closed.

Your phone can be in your pocket.

And somewhere in the cloud, your AI assistant can still be working.
