Gemini Can Now Call Businesses for You And Handle the Conversation
Imagine telling your phone:
“Call the restaurant and move my reservation to Friday.”
Then putting your phone down.
You do not wait on hold. You do not listen to endless “Press 1 for this, press 2 for that.” You do not explain the same thing three times.
Instead, Gemini makes the call for you.
Google is now testing a new feature called “Call for Me,” which takes AI phone assistants a step further. Instead of just helping you navigate a call, Gemini can call a business, speak with the person on the other end, and try to complete the task.
Your AI can now make the annoying calls
The idea is simple: give Gemini a task and let it handle the boring phone work.
According to Google, Gemini can call businesses to check product availability, ask for service prices, book or manage appointments and reservations, navigate automated phone menus, and wait on hold until someone answers.
And this is where things get interesting.
Gemini can use information you approve before the call, such as your name and relevant contact details, to help complete the task.
It can also use your own phone number to make the call through your phone's mobile network.
You can actually watch the AI talk
Google is not simply making the call and disappearing.
While Gemini is speaking with the business, you can follow along using a live transcript. You can also listen to the conversation and, if necessary, take control of the call yourself.
So, if the conversation suddenly goes somewhere Gemini cannot handle, you can step in.
That makes the feature feel less like handing your phone to a robot and more like having an AI assistant working in the background.
And yes, the business knows it is AI
There is an important detail here.
Gemini does not pretend to be a human.
Google says the assistant identifies itself as an AI assistant from Google at the beginning of the call and says that the call is being recorded. It also states the user's name.
Google has also placed limits on what Gemini can do. For example, the feature cannot make emergency calls, complete financial transactions, share sensitive information such as passwords or financial details, or make telemarketing calls.
This is not Google's first attempt
The technology may sound new, but Google has been working toward this for years.
Google previously introduced features such as Hold for Me, which could wait on hold for users, and Direct My Call, which helped people navigate automated phone systems.
Google later introduced Ask for Me, allowing Gemini to contact businesses to ask questions about services and pricing.
“Call for Me” takes that idea further by giving Gemini more responsibility for the actual conversation and task.
Who can use it?
For now, Google is keeping the experiment relatively small.
The feature is being gradually made available to eligible users in the United States who have a Pixel 11, a U.S. SIM card, a Google AI subscription, and the public beta version of the Phone by Google app. The Gemini app must also be updated and set to English.
Google's Pixel 11 series launched in August 2026 with the Tensor G6 chip and expanded Gemini capabilities, making it the hardware platform for several of Google's newest AI experiences.
The bigger picture
This is part of a much bigger shift happening with AI.
AI is moving beyond answering questions and generating content.
It is starting to take action.
Instead of telling you how to make a reservation, an AI agent can potentially make the reservation.
Instead of explaining how to ask a store about stock, it can make the call.
Instead of telling you how to reschedule an appointment, it can attempt to do it.
That is the promise of AI agents: less talking about what needs to be done, more actually getting it done.
But there is still a lot for Google to figure out.
Real phone conversations are messy. People interrupt. Businesses have unusual procedures. Information can change during a conversation. And sometimes a simple question can turn into something completely unexpected.
Google itself says it is starting the feature on a small scale because real-world conversations are nuanced and the company needs to improve the experience before expanding it.
For now, Gemini is not replacing the person holding the phone.
It is becoming the person who makes the call when you do not want to.
And honestly, that might be one of the most practical uses of AI yet.
