The Anthropic IPO Is Coming, And It Could Be One of the Biggest in History
What happens when one of the world’s hottest AI companies decides to go public?
Wall Street is about to find out.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, is preparing for a massive initial public offering that could value the company at around $2 trillion. If that happens, Anthropic would be entering the public market at a scale rarely seen before.
But there is a small twist: investors may have to wait a little longer.
The IPO Has Been Pushed Back
Anthropic was previously expected to make its IPO prospectus public in early September. According to people familiar with the matter, that timeline has now shifted to late September, with the company expected to begin marketing the IPO around mid-October at the earliest.
The actual listing could happen shortly before the U.S. midterm elections in November.
And, importantly, none of these dates are locked in. IPO schedules can change as companies work through market conditions, regulatory reviews, and financing arrangements.
So, for now, investors are watching and waiting.
Why Is Everyone Watching Anthropic?
Because this is not just another tech IPO.
Anthropic is one of the companies sitting at the center of the global AI boom. Its Claude models are competing directly with products from giants such as OpenAI and Google, while businesses are increasingly using AI for coding, research, customer service, and other work.
The company is also spending aggressively to keep up with demand.
In August, Anthropic reportedly agreed to spend $45 billion over six years to rent AI computing capacity from Nscale in West Virginia. The deal would provide access to about 460 megawatts of computing power, using Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin systems.
In other words, Anthropic is not slowing down.
It is building for what it believes could be an enormous future.
Anthropic Is Also Preparing for a Huge Financing Push
As part of the IPO preparations, Anthropic is working on a $15 billion revolving credit facility, with major financial institutions including Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Citi involved in its financing and IPO plans.
And there is another interesting development.
The Financial Times reports that bankers for Anthropic and OpenAI are lobbying credit-rating agencies for investment-grade ratings after their IPOs. A strong rating could help the AI companies borrow money more cheaply as they spend billions building the infrastructure needed to run increasingly powerful AI systems.
The Bigger Question: Will Investors Still Believe the AI Story?
That is what makes this IPO so important.
A valuation approaching $2 trillion would require investors to believe that AI companies can generate enormous long-term revenue despite the staggering cost of chips, data centers, electricity, research, and talent.
Anthropic's IPO could therefore become more than a stock-market debut.
It could become a vote on the future of AI itself.
If investors rush in, it could give the entire AI industry another huge boost. If they hesitate, the message to the market could be very different.
And with OpenAI also expected to eventually pursue a public listing, Anthropic may be opening the door to an entirely new era of publicly traded AI giants.
For now, Wall Street is waiting for one document: Anthropic's IPO prospectus.
Once it arrives, investors will finally get a much clearer look at the money behind Claude and whether a $2 trillion price tag really makes sense.
