ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok All Went Down at Once. What Happened?

For a few hours on Thursday, September 3, something unusual happened across the AI world.

People opened ChatGPT.

Nothing. They switched to Claude. Problems.

Then they tried Grok. Still down.

Three of the biggest AI assistants in the world were experiencing service problems within the same window, leaving users wondering whether the much-talked-about “AI-pocalypse” had finally arrived. 

The good news? The robots came back.

The more interesting question is: why did they disappear at almost the same time?

ChatGPT Went Down First

OpenAI confirmed that ChatGPT and Codex were experiencing elevated errors. The company's explanation was surprisingly simple: a routing error.

According to OpenAI, the problem began around 7:43 a.m. Pacific Time and made ChatGPT and Codex unavailable for some users across different platforms. A fix was implemented roughly 34 minutes later, although OpenAI continued monitoring the system afterward.

The disruption affected several ChatGPT features, including things such as logins, file uploads, image generation, and voice functionality. So, if someone suddenly found their AI assistant refusing to cooperate, they were not imagining things.

Then Claude Started Acting Up

Anthropic's Claude was having problems too.

Claude reported a partial outage involving several of its models, including Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1, and Opus 5.

Anthropic later said it had identified the cause and deployed a fix. The incident was marked resolved at 9:16 a.m. Pacific Time.

And this was not limited to the regular Claude website.

The disruption affected parts of Claude.ai, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and the Claude API, meaning developers and businesses relying on Claude could also feel the impact.

That is important because AI is no longer just a chatbot people visit when they want to ask a question.

For many companies, it is becoming part of the actual workflow.

And Then There Was Grok

Meanwhile, Grok was also struggling.

xAI reported problems across Grok services beginning around 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time.

Later, SpaceX, which owns xAI, said the Grok problems were connected to an outage at its Memphis compute center.

The company eventually confirmed that systems had been restored and traffic was healthy again. And this is where things get really interesting.

Because unlike ChatGPT and Claude, Grok had an identified infrastructure problem.

But that still does not explain why all three major AI platforms experienced problems around the same time.

Was One Big Company Behind It?

That was the obvious question.

At first, some reports pointed toward Microsoft Azure because of its role in providing cloud infrastructure used by major AI services.

But there was a problem with that theory. Nobody has confirmed it.

OpenAI said its issue was a routing error.

xAI pointed to its Memphis compute center.

Anthropic described its incident as an infrastructure problem but did not publicly confirm that Azure or another shared provider was responsible.

Cloudflare also said it was operating normally, while major cloud providers did not show a matching widespread outage that clearly explained everything.

So, for now, there is no confirmed single culprit. The timing may have been a coincidence.

Or there may have been infrastructure connections that have not been publicly explained.

Even Gemini Entered the Conversation

Things became even more interesting when users also reported problems with Google Gemini.

However, there is an important distinction: Google did not confirm a corresponding major Gemini outage. That means it would be wrong to say all four services officially went down.

What we can say is that users reported problems with several major AI platforms during roughly the same period. 

Why This Matters More Than It Sounds

A chatbot going offline for a few minutes is not exactly the end of the world. But three major AI platforms experiencing overlapping problems exposes something bigger.

We are becoming heavily dependent on AI.

Think about it.

Someone may use ChatGPT to write a report.

A developer may use Claude to write or review code.

A business may use an AI API inside its software.

Another company may have an AI agent handling part of its customer service.

When these tools disappear, even temporarily, work can suddenly stop.

And that is why Thursday's incident was more than an amusing moment when everyone had to “think for themselves” again.

It was a small demonstration of what happens when some of the world's most important AI services become unavailable at the same time.

The AI-Pocalypse Was Not Real, But the Warning Was

By the end of the day, ChatGPT, Claude and Grok were back online. 

So no, this was not the AI apocalypse. But it did give the industry something worth thinking about.

As AI becomes more deeply connected to businesses, software and everyday work, reliability matters just as much as intelligence.

The smartest AI in the world is not very useful when you cannot access it.

And Thursday's strange triple outage delivered that lesson in the simplest way possible:
