Claude Can Now Work Without Waiting for Your Prompt
Claude Can Now Work Without Waiting for Your Prompt
Imagine opening your laptop in the morning and finding that your AI assistant has already reviewed your emails, spotted an important meeting, noticed a scheduling conflict, and prepared a summary of what needs your attention.
You didn’t ask it to do any of that. It simply got to work.
That is the idea behind Claude Duet, a new AI agent introduced by Anthropic.
Unlike a traditional chatbot that waits for you to type a question, Claude Duet is designed to take the initiative. It can check connected apps, send you a daily briefing, monitor important updates, and work on assigned tasks while you focus on something else.
The launch marks another step in the AI industry's shift from chatbots that answer questions to AI agents that help get work done. And Anthropic is not making this move alone. OpenAI and Meta are also developing AI agents designed to handle tasks across apps with less direct input from users.
So, what makes Claude Duet different, and could it change how people manage their work?
What Exactly Is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a standalone AI agent designed primarily for professionals and small-business owners who have too many tasks competing for their attention. It is built around Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 model and is available through a separate app for iOS and Android, as well as on the web.
The main difference is how you interact with it.
With a traditional chatbot, you usually have to remember what needs to be done, open the tool, explain the task, and ask for help.
Claude Duet aims to reduce that effort by bringing important information to you. Each morning, it can prepare a short briefing based on your connected apps. During the day, it checks for updates and sends notifications when something appears to require your attention. You can also assign tasks ranging from scheduling meetings to creating dashboards, preparing financial forecasts, developing prototypes, and building web applications.
In simple terms, it is designed to help manage work, not just talk about it.
How Does Claude Duet Work in the Background?
One of the most interesting parts of Claude Duet is that it can continue working after you step away from your device. Suppose you run a small business and have dozens of emails, invoices, meetings, and customer requests to manage.
You could ask Claude Duet to review outstanding invoices, organize the information, and prepare reminder emails for customers who have not paid. Instead of making you sit through every step, it can work through the task using connected tools and notify you when the results are ready.
It can also help prepare a job advertisement, draft follow-up emails, organize information for a sales forecast, or turn a product launch into a social media campaign.
Claude Duet supports more than 6,000 connectors and plugins through the Claude Marketplace, including integrations for tools such as Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, HubSpot and Canva.
This is important because most businesses already rely on multiple apps. An AI assistant becomes more useful when it can work across those tools rather than forcing users to move information manually from one place to another.
However, background work does not mean the assistant has unlimited freedom. Some actions still require human approval.
Will Claude Duet Send Emails or Spend Money Without Asking?
Not for important actions that require approval.
Anthropic says Claude Duet can read information, prepare drafts, and work on tasks independently, but it must seek approval before taking significant actions such as sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting information.
The company has also introduced additional safeguards intended to prevent the assistant from sharing highly sensitive information, including credit card numbers and government identification details. Users can disconnect apps they no longer want Claude Duet to access, and some financial actions remain restricted even when a user approves them.
These safeguards matter because an AI agent with access to email, business accounts, and financial information has more responsibility than a chatbot answering general questions.
A mistake in a chat response might be easy to correct. A mistaken payment or an email sent to the wrong person could have real consequences.
Anthropic says it has tested Claude Duet's security protections, including through external penetration testing.
Still, the company acknowledges that the product is an early version. It may misunderstand a conversation, misjudge how urgent something is, or struggle with personal errands such as booking tickets.
The technology is promising, but it is not perfect.
Why Is Anthropic Launching This Now?
The launch comes as AI companies compete to build agents that can complete work with less human involvement.
OpenAI has been developing its own agents that work across applications, while Meta has introduced its Muse AI agent. The competition is moving beyond which chatbot gives the best answer. Companies increasingly want their AI systems to organize information, use software, carry out multi-step tasks and help users reach an outcome.
For Anthropic, Claude Duet is a way to make Claude more useful throughout the working day.
Instead of opening Claude only when a problem appears, users could rely on it to monitor selected information and alert them when something needs attention. That could make AI more valuable to professionals who spend hours managing emails, meetings, customer enquiries and administrative tasks.
It could also help small-business owners who cannot afford to hire someone for every operational responsibility. But the real test will be whether these agents consistently save time without creating extra work through errors or unnecessary notifications.
Who Can Use Claude Duet?
At launch, Claude Duet is available as a research preview for users on Claude Pro and Max plans in the United States.
Access is through a waitlist, so it is not yet a universally available feature. It also shares the user's existing Claude usage limits, and background tasks count towards those limits. That means availability is currently limited, and users elsewhere should not assume they can access the feature immediately.
Anthropic says feedback from early users will help shape how Claude Duet develops and how it may work alongside the main Claude experience in the future.
